As part of our efforts to spread the word about Spirit of Tivaevae, I will be attending several of the Pacific Islander events and festivals around Southern California this summer. Here is the confirmed schedule thus far, I’ll update the post if we add more events.
Inland Empire Ho’olaule’a
PICC will once again be hosting the cultural villages at the IE Ho’olaule’a. We’ll have our Cook Islands booth, plus I’ll be teaching folks how to make ti leaf leis, and we may have other crafty things going on. Download the flyer
Technically I’ll be working during this event — I’m the official event videographer — however my table will have some tivaevae pillows and flyers. It’s the 10th anniversary of Hura Tahiti, come on out to see all of the amazing dancing! Event info
Heiva San Diego – Tifaifai Workshops
Heiva SD is bringing an artisan over from Tahiti to teach tifaifai quilting workshops. Tahitian tifaifai is very similar to Cook Islands tivaevae, both in name and style. In addition to the workshops, there will be quilts on display from all over Polynesia. Download the flyer
Melodie is the director and producer of Spirit of Tivaevae. Born in New Zealand to a Cook Islander father and American mother, Melodie was raised in the United States. Her family background gives her a unique perspective on being a Pacific Islander raised outside the culture.
